A Lot Has Happened Today
Waveland Place, Chicago IL
Thirty- year old Barbara Lucé looked at her sister with a look of confusion. “Why are you packing?” she asked, pointing toward the red suitcase that contained clothes and toiletries.
Kari, knowing Barbara, laughed, looked her older sister straight in the eye and said, “Running.”
She zipped her bag up and strode out the door.

Millenium Park, Chicago IL
A six-year-old girl, who went by the name Diane Strausner, wiped a tear from her eye with her shirt sleeve, and continued pasting “Lost Dog” flyers in any place she could find. When she passed a small pet shop with pets in the window, she bit her lip and fought the urge to break down in tears.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago IL
An overworked nurse, Julie Bolden, tried calling her 12-year-old son once again, receiving only the dial tone.
“Nurse!” an angry voice shouted from a nearby room, “The bed won’t work!”
Unable to deal with the stress any longer, Julie tore off her nurse shirt jacket and red-crossed hat, stomped down the emergency stairs, and through the revolving doors. She was done.

Brookfield Zoo, Chicago IL
A homeless man, who called himself Herbert Greer, sighed and wiped his dirty, greasy hair from his eyes. A small dog went up to him and licked his face. Herbert smiled a big, toothless smile, patting the dog. He stood up, walking toward the subway nearby.

Union Station, Chicago IL
A 12-year-old boy, Jack, inserted his train ticket into the slot, and passed through the gates.
“Aren’t you a bit young to be taking the subway alone, little boy?” a tall security guard asked him. Jack scowled and strode ahead. In the train car, he sat across from a groudy looking man with a small dog. His phone buzzed, and the caller ID said it was his mother. He scowled once again, and looked at the man across from him.
Jack pictured himself as a man without a home, dirty, muggy clothes, no money, and no family. He hated the image. He ran off the train, into the station. He continued running.
Jack heard a lapping sound next to him. The dog that had been with the homeless man.

Millenium Park, Chicago IL
Diane wiped another tear from her eye.
A boy, older than she was, ran past her. A dog ran into her arms. Her dog.
The “Lost Dog” papers flew around her like oversized confetti.

Chicago, IL
Kari strode across the streets of Chicago, feet hurting.
A red van pulled up next to her. “Need a ride?” a woman asked.
Kari smiled at her and got into the passengers seat. She threw her bag into the backseat.
“Julie.” The woman said, pointing at herself for a moment, “Where are you going?”
“Wherever you are.” The 28-year-old smiled, “I’m Kari.”
The red van drove away.

Chicago, IL
Jack ran. He ran past a shoe store, past a zoo, past a café.

Waveland Place, Chicago IL
Barbara bit her fingernails, knees brought up to her chin. A look of worry was on her face.
Is she really running away? Barbara thought, even though it wasn’t really running away, considering she was 28 years old and had complete freedom.

Alwood Café, Chicago IL
“So whats your story?” Kari asked Julie, sipping her strawberry-banana smoothie.
“Well,” Julie looked down, fidgeting, “My son ran away.”
Kari rubbed her eyelids. “When?”
“This morning.”
“Maybe I can help. Is he that kid running past the café?”
Julie quickly looked out. Jack. Jack! JACK! She ran outside, looking at the running boy.
“Jack!” she called out, and he turned around, little dots of water forming around his eyes.
“Mum.” He said, running into her arms. “Sorry.”
Julie hugged him, and looking back at the café, saw that Kari was not there.

Chicago, IL
Kari whistled a folk song, put her hands in her pockets. She passed a pay phone.
Kari took a quarter out of her pocket. She inserted it into the phone coin slot, dialed the apartment number.

Waveland Place, Chicago IL
The phone rang. No Caller ID was avaliable. Barbara answered it anyway.
“H-hello?” she said through muffled tears.
“Hey Barb,” a framilliar voice said, “I’m coming home. Put some soup on, please.”
Click. The phone line cut. Barbara smiled, tears drying up. She took a soup can out of the cupboard.

Chicago IL
Herbert Greer sighed. Now that the dog was gone, he had no company. He trudged off the subway, sat down in the street, and stuck his empty cup out.
To his surprise, a man in a business suit stopped in front of him. He took out his wallet, taking a crisp $100 bill out.
With wide eyes, Herbert’s jaw dropped.
The man smiled at him. “A lot has happened today.” He said, putting the $100 bill into Herbert’s cup.
The End.
P.S. My molar (tooth) is coming in and it hurts.
