Unregistered	why would the fire nation stop just because the avatar defeated the fire lord i mean they could just crown a new firelord and keep going because everyone knows that an avatar would beat a firelord any day

Unregistered	the fire lord is decided from a blood line he's not necessarily the strongest. The idea after Ozai's death was complete and utter domination and devastation. if the avatar was captured and put into a position where he could neither help nor hurt anyone what hope would the rest of the world have for defeating the fire nation? they had to secure their victory before moving forward and then they had to wait for the right moment to attack. and they're also waiting for the comet.

First of all, Ozai would be dead, so he wouldn't want to wait that long. Second of all, they had to gamble their hopes on the Comet's power because the other Nations were slowly pulling out of their control and rising against them. If they couldn't beat them with the Comet, they would have to wait for another 100 years to win, or they would be defeated first. If they didn't wipe out the rest of the world, the rest of the world would have 100 years to defeat them. They were already gaining courage and strength. That's why they had to win on that day. As for the Ozai losing thing supposedly meaning their defeat, I kinda agree. Azula would definitely take over if he died. But generally, I think the attitude was supposed to be "we win now, or we lose later".
